48 Muscle Cramp Technique

Cramping of muscles in back of calf (Gastrocnemius and Soleus). 

This is the safest method of releasing muscle cramps. 

Do not try to stretch out cramps as that can tear muscle fibers. 

This is only a symptomatic treatment for muscle cramps. The underlying cause of the cramps needs to be treated as well, especially if the cramps are recurring. Often the cause will be a deficiency of calcium, magnesium or potassium. 

Hold your client’s foot in a plantarflexed position. Have your client attempt to dorsiflex their ankle against your resistance.  The muscle  cramp should release quickly. 

The isometric contraction of their tibialis anterior muscle will cause signals to be sent to the Gastrocnemius and Soleus to let go.
