There are points that may bring on labor in pregnant clients. In acupuncture these are referred to as "Forbidden Points" because it is forbidden to needle these in pregnant clients. In massage we need to be careful working around these points.

In a Swedish Massage, it is unlikely you would work on one of these points long enough to cause labor. There is more concern with point specific work, such as acupressure, shiatsu, or trigger point work.

The points to be concerned about are:

GB 21 - on the shoulder, mid-way between the spinous process of the seventh cervical vertebrae and the lateral tip of the clavicle, upon the anterior border of the trapezius

LI 4 - at the high point in the web between the thumb and index finger

UB 60 - midway between the lateral malleolus and the achilles tendon

SP 6 - three finger widths superior to the medial malleolus

Reflexology point for the uterus - midway between the medial malleolus and the heel

We also do not do any work on the abdomen and are careful of points around the sacrum.
