Please watch PNF Principles before doing this stretch.
Hold your client’s elbows and gently stretch them back only as far as is comfortable, taking care not to hyperextend their shoulders. Holding the elbows above the level of the shoulders will stretch the lower fibers of the pecs, whereas holding the elbows lower will stretch the upper fibers. It is important that the client keeps their hands up, as the external rotation of the arm adds to the stretch.
Have your client attempt to bring their elbows together against your resistance - only as strong and as long as is comfortable.
As the pectoralis major muscles fatigue, allow your client’s elbows to come together in front of their chest.
Hold your client’s elbows and gently stretch them back only as far as is comfortable, taking care not to hyperextend their shoulders.
A great variation on this stretch is to do it in a prone position.
