About Dr. Mally

Dr. James Mally is a massage teacher, educational content producer, and creator of MassageLibrary.com. He has been doing massage professionally since 1976 and teaching massage classes since 1979. His initial training was a 1000-hour massage program at Lindsey Hopkins School in Miami. He later attended Bastyr University in Seattle where he graduated as a Naturopathic Doctor in 1984.

In 1990 he founded Healing Arts Institute, a California state-approved massage therapy school. He owned and directed the school until 2011, and graduated over 3000 massage therapists during that time.

He produced his first massage video, Deep Tissue Massage, in 1996. The video employed a 3-D computer skeleton and is believed to be the first massage video to use 3-D computer graphics. He went on to produce other videos (now DVDs) and workbooks on Sports Massage, Swedish Massage, Side Lying Massage, and Massage Cupping. These DVDs and workbooks are being used in massage schools worldwide. His Side Lying Massage DVD has been translated into Japanese and is very popular in Japan.

Dr. Mally sold his massage school in 2011 so he could have more time to see massage clients and to develop, practice, and refine massage techniques. He operates a teaching practice where he works with massage therapists and their problem clients, sharing assessment techniques and strategies to help the clients. Selling the school also allowed Dr. Mally to travel more to teach his workshops internationally, do more DVD production, and to develop an online massage library at www.massagelibrary.com.

Dr. Mally was inducted into the Massage Therapy Hall of Fame in 2018.

What is 推拿 Tuī Ná?

Tuī Ná 推拿 translates as “Push and Grasp” and indicates the active, hands-on form of massage/bodywork sometimes referred to as “Chinese Meridian Massage”. Developed and practiced over thousands of years, Tuī Ná follows the theories and concepts of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) utilizing the remarkable energies of the hand guided by the mind/heart Xin 心. In short, Tuī Ná utilizes the strength and suppleness of the human hand to work body/mind/spirit like Acupuncture does, just without needles!

Tuī Ná is widely practiced throughout the Asian world and is becoming popular in the West due to its remarkable, even transformative results. Tuī Ná focuses its work along the Meridian lines, “energy rivers”, used in Acupuncture and Acupressure, especially focusing on the joints, the “river bends” if you will. From lighter movements akin to Swedish Massages’s effleurage out to stronger more assertive movements comparable to Deep Tissue massage, Tuī Ná uses a variety of different hand (and arm!) movements and a range of pressures to create a broad and effective spectrum of therapeutic touch. Tuī Ná can be used for general relaxation, to increase circulation, to improve joint mobility, and in the hands of a gifted practitioner, as a flexible, transformative healing arts form.

The “goal” of Tuī Ná is to allow the body’s Qì 氣 (innate wisdom and energy) to circulate well, thus encouraging natural health and the balance of body, mind, and spirit.

Joseph J. Carter, L. Ac.

Joseph is an accomplished practitioner, author & teacher in the fields of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Deep Ecology & Aromatherapy. He graduated from the College of Natural Resources (UC Berkeley 1982) with a self crafted Major in Ecological Community Design & Development. Drawn to the hands on Healing Arts of Acupressure & Herbology he went on to study & teach at the Acupressure Institute (Berkeley, CA), where he was a student, a teacher, the Assistant Director & then Director over a period of 30+ years. In the midst of this journey he decided it was time to become a Licensed Acupuncturist via studying TCM at the Academy of Chinese Culture & Health Sciences (Oakland, CA). Once licensed in Acupuncture (1988) he returned to the Acupressure Institute and began doing sessions and teaching full time.

In addition to crafting over 300 hours of Acupressure curriculum himself, he oversaw the design & development of over 1000 hours of curriculum for his school. Along with his extensive schooling he has had the honor of years of direct study & training with Elisabeth Rochat de la Vallee (Classical Chinese Medicine) and Kazuaki Tanahashi (Zen Calligraphy).

A note from Joseph…

I’m a very lucky person, I found my calling in hands on natural healing when I was 18 years old – and for the 45 years since then, I’ve been “workin it” via private practice, teaching and creating healing arts classes and programs. As to 推拿 Tuī Ná (Meridian Massage) I had a massage/bodywork background when I first started studying 推拿 Tuī Ná during my years in Acupuncture school. My teachers were not native speakers of English, heck, they didn’t even have an outline or a curriculum! They had me follow them around in clinic, showed me what they wanted me to do with a particular client, then monitored me while I worked (“wax on; wax off”. 🙏🏼, Mr. Miyagi). As a recent graduate of UC Berkeley (too well steeped in academia!) I was driven crazy by not having a textbook or formal training regime. It was some time in my 100th (approximately) unpaid session of giving or “playing” 推拿 Tuī Ná that I embodied the art in my own way and from my own felt experience; finally “doing, not trying to do”.

I have been a professional 推拿 Tuī Ná  therapist since that day. I am forever grateful to my teachers for their time, their patience and their kindly, challenging teachings.

I hope I get a chance to teach you this exquisite practical art.  I have a curriculum!

AND I may still drive you crazy as I teach you and encourage you to work with your heart and hands mostly, and your thinking mind a bit less so… J🙏🏼
